How to move around the city
Vienna is a city known for its efficient and convenient public transportation system, making it easy to navigate without a car. Here’s a quick guide to getting around:
Vienna’s extensive network of trams, buses, and the U-Bahn (subway) provides fast and reliable connections throughout the city. The U-Bahn operates until midnight on weekdays and runs 24 hours on weekends, making it ideal for exploring both day and night. Tickets are affordable and can be purchased at stations, kiosks, or through the Wiener Linien mobile app.
Vienna’s iconic red and white trams offer scenic routes through the city and are an easy way to reach many attractions. They’re especially helpful for short journeys and provide a unique way to see Vienna’s neighborhoods from above ground.
Vienna is a highly walkable city, with pedestrian-friendly streets and plenty of walking paths in parks and along the Danube River. Cycling is also popular, with an extensive bike-sharing program, Citybike, and numerous bike lanes throughout the city.
Taxis are readily available and can be flagged down, called, or booked through apps. Vienna also has ride-sharing options like Uber and Bolt for convenient and flexible transport.
From Vienna International Airport, you can reach the city center in about 15 minutes with the City Airport Train (CAT), or in 25-30 minutes by S-Bahn or airport bus. Taxis and rideshares are also available for door-to-door convenience.
